Any possibility of running 2560x1600 on 30" Dell 3007WFP?

Asked by Adam Frankel

Hi,
I am currently running a Quad Core Intel Based system with an Nvidia GeForce8800 GTX and a Dell 30" LCD at resolution 2560x1600, and a 2 TB- 5 Disk Raid 5 array. I tried booting off the Live CD and the best I could get in Kubuntu was 1280x1024. I tried installing the Nvidia Drivers using "apt-get install nvidia-glx-new" and could not get them to install. So two part question:

1. Was the failure to install the drivers caused by the fact that I was using my Live CD? I mean - is it supposed to be possible to install these drivers on a Live CD? And why didn't the Live CD just detect and install my drivers automatically?

2. After installing the drivers, what are the chances I will be able to run 2560x1600 display?

3. I noticed the Live CD did not appear to detect or mount my Raid5 partition. What are the chances that I will be able to get my Raid Array detected if it is running of the Intel Motherboard Chipset Controller the Intel ICH8R/ICH9R SATA RAID Controller?

Try system, administration, restricted manager to install the drivers. They don't install by default because they are a non-free package.

Thanks for responding.

Is this a menu in KDE or Gnome? I don't seem to recall that being in the menu in KDE. I'll check again tomorrow.

Sorry, that's the gnome menu - you'll have to look through the KDE menu I'm not familiar, but it's restricted manager

To answer in order to your questions:

1. I suppose you can install the drivers also on a LiveCD (they should be installed on the ram), anyway even if you did you cannot be sure that once installed you'll have the same result...anyway nvidia drivers are always problematic on (K)ubuntu, I mean, in the end they work but if you are unlucky you'll have towork strugle a little before...for any solution you can read this wiki: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/FixVideoResolutionHowto

2. If your system and your monitor both support 2560x1600 resolution, you should be able to run it once installed! Maybe you'll need to install manually the latest nvidia drivers and add the resolution settings to your xorg.con file, anyway it's all on the wiki I wrote above (also other methods you can try).

3. For (K)ubuntu to detect you Raid5 partition is no problem, you'll just have to install the mdadm tool from the repositories and configure some settings. You can't boot from a Raid5 though, but I'm not sure if maybe recently something improved and now it is possible.
You can read these very useful guides: http://bfish.xaedalus.net/?p=188 , http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=408461

Hope for the best, maybe you'll spend some time with configurations here and there, but in the end everything will work so don't give up!;)
