Install Linux backports

im not able to hear the sounds on my speakers for the audio or video that i play. but the sounds are audible on my headphone..

So i would like to know if installing linux backports would solve my problem.. if yes what is the syntax to install linux backports?

No, it most likely wouldn't. A repository can be "enabled" rather than "installed" anyways.

In general, you can select the software sources by navigating to 'System > Administration > Software Sources' in the gnome menu. Or you can manually edit (need superuser privileges) '/etc/apt/sources.list'. Given you asked this question, I'd say stick to the menu for now.

As for the sound please post the output of 'cat /proc/asound/cards'

If it works for the headphones but not the speakers ... Why not try plugging the speakers into the headphone jack?
