system crash after update ubuntu 8.04

Asked by james

hi,

y,day (5th august 08) i tried to update my 8.04 , and it fetched the updates and started to do the changes ( i did not notice specifically about the change, i think it was on Xorg + some other patches altogether less than 1 mb) then in between i noticed while it was installing the changes it was showing some files with intel etc ( my system is amd 5000 (64 bit) + asus ) etc, then the system hanged for about 2-3 minutes, then i had to switch it off manually and i tried to reboot

this time it failed to boot ( i am using 2.6.24.19 kernel). it started giving errors and again got hanged, i did try for two three times and the same thing happened. so i tried to boot it from cd and from the console i tried to clean my root with e2fsck and it reported so many errors and after fixing it all i tried to reboot and it is not coming up.

plz help

thanks
james

Thank you for taking the time to report this issue and helping to make Ubuntu better. Examining the information you have given us, this does not appear to be a bug report so we are closing it and converting it to a question in the support tracker. We appreciate the difficulties you are facing, but it would make more sense to raise problems you are having in the support tracker at https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu if you are uncertain if they are bugs. For help on reporting bugs, see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs .

Thanks for your question.

Could it be that your harddisk is having problem? When the system cannot write on the harddrive, it can have a behaviour that you describe, i.e. hanging.

Please use a live-CD and try to check out if the harddrive is ok or not.

If the harddrive is ok, you should be able to mount the partition. Please retrieve the information in /var/log/dist-upgrade and convert the attached bug report back to a bug report, and upload the files in that folder. This will greatly aid us in tracking down your problem.

Hope this helps.

thanks ralph,

i am able to mount all the partitions using the live cd, i shall write down the message i get while booting:

init: unable to to execute /bin/sh for rcs : no such file or directory
init: rcs main process (2703) terminated with status 255
init: unable to to execute /bin/sh for rc-default : no such file or directory
init: rc-default main process (2704) terminated with status 255

i have been using 'hardy' for the last three months, and this problem happened y'day only.
if you still want me to load the old /var/log/dist-upgrade i shall load it, (i cud see that after mounting my root)

hope i cud get some help now

thanks in advance

james
