motherboard chipset drivers

Asked by pcnerd

My dad has an old Dell desktop that's dieing. He keeps getting BSODs. It has XP Pro. He might be interested in trying Linux. I have a LiveCD with Ubuntu on it. The hard drive would be easy to replace. The motherboard chipset drivers are Windows. Does the motherboard need to have Linux chipset drivers?

Thank you.
David

The necessary drivers are most likely provided by the Linux-kernel itself. I recommend that you just attempt to use the LiveCD - if the LiveCD works - you should most likely be able to install Ubuntu on the computer.

I hope this helps :)

This will be my first experience with Linux. Very interesting! I wonder why the Windows kernel doesn't support the motherboard chipset. Well, there's only one way to find out if I can install Ubuntu on my dad's PC & that is to try the LiveCD & if that is successful then I will try to install it.

Thank you.

Windows XP is an old OS... so it may not have all the drivers. Ubuntu 8.04 is much more recent so hardware support is better.

Thanks for the update. My dad replaced the hard drive & I reinstalled Windows XP. He has never upgraded hardware in a PC! I told him what to do & he removed the hard drive, unplugged the cables, installed the new hard drive & reattached the cables! Then I reinstalled XP. He hasn't had any problems since then.

Thanks pcherd good advise indeed. I wiped off win7 beta now back to xp.
MS os is heading for second choice.. May be Ubuntu will be out in the
lead... hope so. Oh for the days of Dos 5 when pc users were in controll of
their pcs MS now dictates terms and 'torpeto' the competition it would seem
