Ubuntu Freezes - Monitor Related?

Asked by atgreen

So I installed Ubuntu 6.06 on my computer, and the system keeps locking up at various times.

To start off, I run an Intel P4 2.6 Ghz, ATI Radeon 9700 Pro, 512 Mb No Name Ram. Monitor is DELL 2007WFP.

RAM passes Memtest86 the three times I've ran it through (and the system runs just fine on windows, as an aside.): here's the timing line (from Memtest86):
Settings: RAM: 159 Mhz (DDR 318) / CAS : 2.5-3-3-7 / Single Channel (64 Bits)

Anyway, installation runs fine, then after trying to update the OS, system freeze. I rebooted, finished running the updated, repairing the broken package, and restarted. After restart and some light use, system froze again.

The reason why I say it might have something to do with the monitor is that I took it work to try and work on it there and it
ran all day with no problems, the only thing changing between it's home station and what I have it plugged into at work is
the keyboard, mouse, and monitor. I don't think it's keyboard/mouse related (I use the wireless combo from Microsoft), so perhaps its the monitor "Dell 2007WFP". On a side note, I don't have widescreen support even after updating. Resolution is supposed to reach 1680x1050, and it won't change to that in the selection... as shown in my xorg.conf.

I know a little about what I'm doing, but I'm kind of at the end of my rope here. Couldn't find a similar problem using the FAQ or otherwise.

Here's a copy of my XORG.conf:

# /etc/X11/xorg.conf (xorg X Window System server configuration file)

Thanks! I went ahead and made a few changes to my xorg.conf, and now it boots up in 1680x1050, with 60hz as the refresh rate, but unfortunately, it still freezes! Any ideas on where this is coming from?

Have you got another computer that you can use to SSH into this computer from, it's unlikely that the system has actually frozen completly, more that the video card is being silly.

Two things that you could try:

Install the driver which ATI make this is called the fglrx driver and can be installed by installing the package "xorg-driver-fglrx" if you cannot find this in synaptic package manager please enable the proprietary drivers in "software sources". Do this while in synaptics via settings > repositories , then you should see it on the first tab

once this has been installed you may need to update your xorg.conf swapping out: Driver "ati"
for "Driver "fglrx"

alternatively you could try the vesa driver, although this may not give your very good rending speeds.

I may be a rank newbe, but I experienced the same thing with virtually identical hardware and got around it. . .

Using the Applications \ Add\Remove \ System Tools \ AT Ibinary X.Org . . . did not work.

What did work was: Download latest ATI .RUN file from ATI (Yesterday it was at http://ati.amd.com/support/drivers/linux/linux-radeon.html)
Go To System \ Administration \ Software Sources \ (disable) Proprietary Drivers for Devices (restricted)
Applications \ Accessories \ Terminal
Type cd desktop (even though it says you are already at the desktop)
Type: sudo apt-get update <ENTER>
sudo apt-get install linux-restricted-modules-$(uname -r) <ENTER>
sudo apt-get install xorg-driver-fglrx <ENTER>

then
sudo aticonfig initial <ENTER>

then
sudo shutdown -r now <ENTER>

Can you help with this problem?
