have you downloaded a unbuntu hardy heron 8.04 live cd and booted it? did you try using wubi - windwos ubuntu installer?

and if you are doing a single boot (i.e ubuntu only) then change your bootup order in your bios to cd/dvd rom first and pop your cdrom in and then refer
