Ubutu crashing

Asked by danthemanca

I just installed Ubuntu 8.04 on a Pentium 4 PC. This computer has been very stable running XP and Vista but when Ubuntu is running it crashes. This can happen 5 - 10 min.s after starting the PC or can happen after 1 hr.. Screen stays on monitor but keyboard and mouse freeze. At this point I have to power cycle the PC. I have changed mouse and keyboard (PS2 to USB) and remove all unnecessary PCI cards with no change. Is there a log created that may help me figure out what is causing the crash? Any other trouble shooting steps would be helpful. This crashing happens even when I run Ubuntu from the CD. Switching back to XP or Vista and the PC is now stable and runs great.

Thanks for the help.

you can have a look at your logs using:
gnome-system-log

but if your system crashes really badly you maybe see nothing...

Can you help with this problem?
