Setup Problem -- Ubuntu Server

Asked by paulman88

I have my disc that got sent to me, (reason for getting disc sent is that when i burnt it there were errors,) I tried to install SAMBA file share for my LAN (using wired connection to my router.)

I got everything install but when i look on my (WINDOWS XP PROFESSIONAL) computer it could not find it.

I am not going to use the server for any online uses. I am just using it as extra space for all computers in the house (not all computers are mine).

I will be happy with a file server that you can just connect to (password or not) and add edit and download files.

I would be really happy if i could have a some form of login that when logs in can only edit their folder (add sub-folders if they add any).

I do not understand command lines and am happy to go though the installation again

Please can you help me make this happen.

Thankyou
Paul

ps
I hope I put enough detail.

If not heres more,
server version = 8.04 LTS,
Router = Belkin,
In the Belkin menu I have add virtual servers,
All server connection are wired along with my computer but laptops use the wireless.

Hi there, I've got a few questions.

Is your server using dynamic or static IP?
Why do you need virtual servers in Belkin?

Here is a quick how-to that should do the trick for what you need (the instructions are for Gutsy but they work for Hardy too): http://ubuntuguide.org/wiki/Ubuntu:Gutsy#Samba_Server

Can you help with this problem?
