I don't know what you are searching for exactly but I will try to give you some hints.

A good way to learn if you want to contribute in programming is to help with bugs. The BugSquad is a good way to start: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/BugSquad/

If you want to learn more about concepts resp. you have tons of ideas waiting to be implemented, the best way would be to work upstream, i.e. directly in the project providing the software which is then packaged in Ubuntu. Examples for this are the desktop environments, GNOME, KDE, etc.

I hope I could give you some useful hints to start.
