Upgrading fro 7.10 to 8.04 locks up.

This upgrade on an Acer Inspire 1360 freezes with 7 minutes to run, last entry says 'en utf-8--'opened a terminal and tried 'sudo dpkg --configure -a' got the message 'database area is locked by another process' This is the second time it's done it, any suggestions please.
