16.04 randomly hangs on Lenovo Yoga3

Asked by Mick Petrovich

Hi, since the initial install, the boot hangs randomly after installing Ubuntu 16.04 on Lenovo Yoga3 laptop. This is the only OS on it .
I am very much inexperienced user..... I had Linux Mint installed instead to no avail and I reverted back to Ubuntu (which I am familiar with (basic functions)). It drives me mad, but I refuse to re-install Windows. Can anyone help, please?

Have you tried testing the RAM using Memtest86 from GRUB at boot time

Thanks for answering. I have tried that, but it showed no issues. The laptop is running perfectly normally right now, but that is because it decided to boot properly - this is so random, it makes no sense whatsoever! When it is working everything is fine, but it is bound to hang on boot soon....

If you use a non-compoziting session like XFCE or LXDE then is it better?

Sorry man, but this is not the language I understand.... I have no idea what Xfce is and had to look it up.... Therefore, I am not sure what I'm using. Thanks.

If you run:

sudo apt-get install xfce4

Then log off, switch to the XFCE session then log in then you will be using the new session.

If you find any terms you don't understand then a quick web search will tell you what you need to know

Thank you again for your message. I have initially followed instructions and replaced quiet splash with nomodeset and that seemed to work better, although graphics were bit funny while system was running. The problem is that this "boot hang" is so random, that I never know if any changes caused the improvement or otherwise....
I have since reverted back to "normal" quiet splash, but have now installed xfce, as per your instructions. I haven't been able to see the xfce screen, though following this install...? I am researching it now..... I will close this issue soon. Thank you again!

I've tried the xfce screen and both it and default seemed to work fine. I think it is all good now, so I'll close this issue. Thank you for your help.
