Sounds like we have a hardware problem if the HD is no longer detected...

Does your bios detect the drive?

Have you checked the cables connecting the drive?

Do you have a spare drive to try?

the boot loader just reappeared, i donot know how, then booted into XP and the system hanged again, but it then showed an error msg that there has been a hardware or software error caused by a newly installed device or software and the computer is shut down, pls restart the comp and if the problem persists disable the newly installed hardware/software.(this is the second time this has happened)

i restarted and the boot loader got wiped out once again.

i had installed a serial AVR programmer which did not work properly about 2 weeks ago

the BIOS does not detect the HDD
i do not have a spare drive
i will check the cables right away and try it.....
i am currently using a Ubuntu live CD on the same comp

i unplugged the cable from the SATA slot and connected it to another slot and it is working now

but still the main problem is not solved, there was a power failure and this HDD not being thing happened again

i had removed the serial programmer before the power failure so this was not caused by it.

Well... now that you have mentioned the power failure... there is a chance that something is fried... It might be worth it to go get a second drive and see if that one works... I really do not like the fact that your bios is not detecting the HD...

When you boot to the liveCD are you able to see the HD?
