gtk3+ file browser: sidebar is useless and saving files is horror

Asked by Jens

Since updating Firefox to version 45++ I was constantly having problems with the file browser dialogue. First of all the sidebar was pretty useless as it did nothing at all. Except when I dragged one of my favourite folder links and dropped it on itself, it was able to open the desired folder.
But it turns to become really bad, when I want to save a file.
When the destination folder is already opened, it saves the file correctly, but just after the second click on "Save". But when I need to change the destination folder and then click on "Save", it selects a random existing file and replaces the original destination filename with an existing one. Thank God, it needs a second click to start the saving process, because elsewise it would overwrite existing files with new contents each time!!! So I always need to copy the destination filename before changing the directory to the clipboard and restore it later in the destination folder.

This is a real hell of a problem and this is an absolute no go! I mean, I'm in computer since the early 80's but I never experienced such a strange behaviour.

Meanwhile I finally could locate this problem to GTK3+, because this now appears also in DeaDBeeF with GTK3+ interface selected as well.

How can this be fixed?

Still I am looking for an answer after the 3rd re-installation and no changes in this behaviour.

Isn't there anyone who has any kind of idea?

Nothing changed so far and it would be nice if someone could help on this issue.

I think I cannot be the only one, because this error remains in the 3rd installation of Kubuntu 14.04 LTS and through several versions of Firefox where I mostly recognize this problem.

Howsoever, this problem doesn't seem to come with Firefox as other GTK3+ save dialogs in other programs show the same effect. It's just that I have to use the FF save dialog quite frequently and it is really annoying to start the save process again and again because I forget each time to copy the file name to clipboard before changing the path to restore it afterwards for not overwriting the automatic randomly selected existing file.

So who can help? Any heroes of the day out there?

The problem still remains.

I don't know what else I could write or do and I'd really appreciate any kind of reaction.

Sorry, but apparently no one else has experienced such strange behavior so far.
We are not able to identify the cause of your problems, and do not know how to correct it.
Do you see the chance for a new installation of Ubuntu (after creating backup copies of your private files)?

Thank God and thank you for responding!

I already made 2 additional and new installations of Kubuntu (same versions @ different times). Me too had the same thought of a strangely faulty OS installation so I tested it on a parallel backup system (with just a few programs) where it was the same and on a completely new one.

I guess it started with Firefox 47 (with the GTK3+ integration) but I really can't say it exactly because up to then my experiences on Ubuntu/Linux where quite low and I think I didn't have any other GTK3+ programs constantly running or open/save dialogs to call. Anyway, in spite of this behaviour primarily within firefox, I instantly presumed it could be a problem of firefox, but later I had this in a DeaDBeef dialog and some other progs I can't recall right now.

Could it be – just a thought – that firefox changed some GTK3+ libraries in an accidentally (and repeatedly) bad manner? How could I check this and fix it if needed.

Howsoever, this sounds strange that I should be the only one – after 3 installations of Kubuntu.

Nevertheless, in a few days I will have to change my mainboard along with a new system HDD which has more space for further OS's and I finally want to install Kubuntu 16 LTS alongside. But I'm still stuck to Kubuntu 14 as one or two necessary programs seem hard to install and/or to run on later Ubunuts.

I guess I'll have to see if this problem will still remain on the new system if it is so odd or exotic.

Anyhow, thanks for your answer!
