How to improve Ubuntu 16.04

Asked by Edmond Condillac

My Ubuntu 16.04 LTS (Xenial Xersus) system often freezes and I loose much time having to re-boot the system and then back track to where I was before the unexpected interruption.

It would be most kind and helpful if I could be advised & instructed how to avoid this problem. Or how to overcome it without having to re-boot the system, please.

What desktop session are you using?

Having used the command:
env | grep DESKTOP_SESSION=

gives DESKTOP_SESSION=ubuntu

However, the command: ls /usr/bin/*session
 gives /usr/bin/gnome-session

If you install LXDE then log off and log in to the LXDE session, is it OK?

You can do this by running the below in a terminal:

sudo apt-get install lxde

After having installed LXDE as per your kind instructions above, the following output results:

$ ls /usr/bin/*session
/usr/bin/dbus-run-session /usr/bin/gnome-

$ env | grep DESKTOP_SESSION=
DESKTOP_SESSION=gnome

I'm continuing to check the difference after logging in to LXDE. So far its been good.

Many thanks for the kind help

Seems you were having issues with compoziting. LXDE doesn't use it and runs great on any video hardware. It's also great for low end systems as it uses fewer resources.

There are lots of themes for Openbox which is the default window manager.
