I get A System Problem has been detected. Report Y/N
I recently upgraded from 14.04 to 16.04 and I now get numerous pop-up messages saying, "A System Problem has been Detected Do You Want to Report it Now. Report/Cancel. I don't know if this is legitimate or not. So far everything else seems to work OK. I'm not sure whether to respond to the message or not.

Yes if you are seeing an issue then report it and things get fixed. This is apport doing it's job.
You can easily disable it if you like

So, I've been "reporting" this problem for a week now and things have only been getting worse. I recently tried to install a free application, "gbrainy," to see if the new installation stuff still worked. Apparently not! Gbrainy never installed and now "Ubuntu Software" will not open. I get a brief nearly empty screen and then it goes away. So far, I'm not very impressed with 16.04.

If you run:
sudo apt-get update
Is it OK?
There is a known bug with software centre presently. You can use Synaptic to work around it. There is a cache folder that if you clear it out then software centre works.
Does the system work otherwise?

Manfred,
Thank you for getting back to me.
Here's the output you requested.
I'm assuming you believe that there was an update, perhaps, that will solve
the problems I'm having. I installed V16.04 from the CD included in the
Summer 2016
Ubuntu User magazine.
I have say that I tried the "Windows" fix to so many of their problems
and that
was to reboot. After the reboot, Ubuntu Software opened as it should. I
was able
to install the latest Gimp Image Editor, and after rebooting again, Gimp
worked.
Thank you again for responding!

Ok, there are some obsolete and/or double entries.
For correcting the error and doing some cleanup do the following:
issue the command
sudo gedit /etc/apt/
In the editor window that opens (after entering your password as confirmation for an administrative action) do the following modifications:
in lines 51 and 52 (containing "precise partner"): remove the "#" character at the beginning of the lines and change the word "precise" into "xenial"
in lines 56 and 57 (containing "extra"): insert "#" at the beginning of the lines.
copy line 99 (containing "openprinting") and insert it before line 59 (just below the ones with "extra")
delete all lines after that new "openprinting" line (lines 60 to the end)
save the file and close the editor.
Finally re-issue the commands
cat-n /etc/apt/
sudo apt-get update
and report the results.

This looks good, there is just a warning left (about a weak hash algorithm), but this is something what openprinting.org has to work on.
Now to the next problem:
Can you now open the Ubuntu software program?
If not, there is a known problem (bug #1606238 )
A suggested workaround is deleting the files in ~/.local/

Manfred,
I have left you alone for a while, for the holidays, but I am still getting
the "internal error" pop-up and I continue to press the "Report Problem"
button. It doesn't seem to affect any of the stuff that I do but I have only
been using e-mail and doing a little shopping on line. I haven't been
using any other software at all.
I do appreciate your efforts to this point.

The next time that this "internal error" pop-up appears, can you please try to look into the details of the problem and at least try identifying which package it is about?

Manfred,
It's difficult to decipher what it is complaining about.
Here's a screenshot of most of what I'm seeing.

Attaching screenshots to Launchpad answers does not work.
You can either upload the image to an image hosting service of your choice and post the link to that picture, or just tell us the key information that you see after pressing 'show details':

Manfred,
Unfortunately, I can't copy/paste from the "details" page that is displayed.
Here's what I had the patience to write down;
Problem type
Crash
Title
gnome-software crashed with signal 5 in g-main-
ApportVersion
2.
Achitecture
amd64
You have some obsolete package versions installed.
Please upgrade the following packages and check if the problem still occurs.
gnome-software
adwaita-
appstream
apt
apt-utils
dbus
dpkg
glib-
glib-
glib-
gnome-
init-
krb5-locales

libappstream3

and many many more!
If this is really the solution, where should I go to find upgrades to
all of these?
I guess the bigger question is, why weren't they upgraded with my
original upgrade
to Ubuntu 16.04?

I do not think that the reference is to updates that were missing during the release upgrade to 16.04, but it is about program corrections that were provided afterwards (some of them just three days ago) and that should be installed by running update-manager.
For further diagnostics please issue the commands in a terminal window:
uname -a
lsb_release -crid
apt-cache policy gnome-software apt dpkg dbus
sudo apt-get update
apt-get --simulate dist-upgrade
and copy/paste the output as done before.

ok, there are several program updates available that are not yet installed on your system.
Maybe updating helps for your "A System Problem has been detected" problem.
Run the command
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
and confirm the question whether you want to install the updates by hitting the enter key.
Can you help with this problem?
Provide an answer of your own, or ask Craig Daniels for more information if necessary.
