grub boot menu missing ?

Asked by df.daly

Hi Folks,

I rarely Reboot but but after the last reboot I am presented with a Grub command prompt instead of this menu.

During a normal boot I am usually presented with a boot menu which continues to boot Ubuntu 16.04lts after a few seconds if left alone, or you can choose another kernel to boot.

After some reading of the grub Manual page it seems that running "grub-mkconfig" might fix this.

My question is, do you run grub-mkconfig form the grub command prompt or from a terminal inside ubuntu?
Or is this a good idea at all? does anyone have another fix?

My normal desktop is an 64bit AMD 6 core and 8gb ram,16.04LTS which resides on a 250gb SSD drive, there is also a 1tb HDD with 12.10 on it and a 500gb HDD with 14,04.

for now I have found that if I go into the BIOS, in the Boot tab, I can click on the "SSD drive" and 16.04 boots up directly without having to save, exit or reboot !!!!! never seen that behaviour before. (maybe a feature of the new type of BIOS)

Thanks in advance, D

If you hold SHIFT at boot, do you see the menu?

Hi,

Before i got your reply, i installed the latest updates which required a reboot and after a couple of tries the menu has returned.
Can't imagine what caused the problem in the first place, but it seems to have resolved it's self.

Thank you for replying though.
