Help installing icon sets in ubuntu 8.04

Asked by Cotowar

Hi, I was wondering how to get a different icon set from those provided by default in Ubuntu 8.04. I have downloaded and extracted an icon set folder, but cannot seem to get it to the proper place. I have gone to system - preferences - appearance, and tried to change it that way, but it will not let me select the icon set I want because it is not in the proper directory. I am new to this sort of thing, so assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

When you download them they should be in a .tar.gz format or something similar. Dont' untar them at all, just simply go to themes tab in appearances and click on install and it should install the icon set. It will tell you if it install correctly and ask you if you want to apply it, if it doesn't install correctly it will come up saying so.

Thank you very much. I didnt realize that you oculd install icon themes like a general desktop theme. I really appreciate your help.

I have to say also, I noticing most of the stuff in Linux is easier than I make it. A lot of it is just simply drag and drop or multi-purpose based, such as the appearance manager. I´ve done several desktop layouts and that part was easy, but I didn´t realize this also applied to other things such as icon sets.
