Go to Software>Software Sources and tell what it says for the server that you are downloading from becaues right now its pulling the packages from your own localhost. Also are you trying to use a proxy or something.

As you said its pulling from da loopback address, how do you change it to point somewhere else.
whwn i go to Synaptic Package Manager the network settings say that it is configure to connect directly to the internet, hence no proxy.

Open up /etc/apt/apt.conf and tell me if it says anything there.

i used this command "find / -iname"
and got this output:

/usr/sbin/anon-proxy
/usr/share/doc/anon-proxy
find: /home/user_name/.gvfs: Permission denied
/etc/default/anon-proxy
/etc/init.d/anon-proxy

so i'm assuming it is installed.

Ok that is why you are having the problems then go into Synaptic and completely remove anon-proxy and the try to reload your source list and it should work then.

HI,

I kinda the same error but a different IP:

Error:
W: Failed to fetch http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/hardy-security/multiverse/i18n/Translation-en_AU.bz2 Could not connect to 10.1.1.1:8080 (10.1.1.1). - connect (111 Connection refused)

I am not behind a proxy and as far as i can tell i don't have anon-proxy installed, although i am new to Ubuntu 8.04

My Network Proxy Preference is set to Direct internet connection.

and i can get on the net find and check emails...

any idea?

I've been searching the forms for some time now...
