starting X over SSH

Asked by Bogdan Butnaru

Hi! I'm using Feisty and I'm looking for a way of doing a remote X login over SSH.

I have several computers I'd like to login into from a single place, but I can't use XDMCP because the network is not secure. I'd like to do everything over SSH.

I know I can run a remote application using SSH, but I would like to run a complete session, with desktop and panel and all. Actually, I've set-up multiple X servers using the hints https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+ticket/4043 and I'd like to use one of them for remote logins.

I know that GDM is supposed to have support for remote logging-in using SSH, but for some reason it doesn't seem to be available in Feisty. What I'd like is a way to hack it back in, or perhaps some scripts I can set it to run with the same effect.
