how to change ring options in skype for linux?

Asked by treetaxi

I installed Skype for linux on my ubuntu (hardy) machine, and don't like the ring-tone. It shows an option to choose the .wav file to be played on the incoming-call event, but when I change it to a different file, it refuses to play. Even when I renamed my preferred file to the default's name & put it in the same directory, it won't play.

I just tested changing the default ringtone to another of the event-.wav 's that came with skype , and got success.

Is Skype using magic numbers, or a particular volume setting? Does any body know how to get it to play whatever they (I) want it to?

Hi treetaxi,

Skype seems to store wav files (Make sure it's actually PCM format wav and not an mp3/ogg) that's in 16kbit mono.

It's possible the files you were trying to use were stereo ?

Hope that helps.

One thing you could do is open the files in Audacity or sound recorder and that will display the full details of them to help you create one yourself.

All the best,

Félim

It seems that Skype has some limitations with choosing custom ringtones on Linux. You can try to check if the audio file format of the ringtone is correct and also try increasing the volume of the audio file. If you're still having problems, you can refer to the Skype support forums or the Linux community for more detailed solutions. Also try visiting https://ringtonesjp.info/ to check out different ringtone options

Can you help with this problem?
