why cant i extract tar files,archive manager says i dont have adequate priviliges

i have mounted my fat drives on ubuntu hardy as mention by me in other thread,ubuntu hardy doesnt mount fat partitions upon fresh install,i tried on 3 pc's.now that i have tweaked the fstab to mount them using settings like
/dev/sda8 /media/HUMMING vfat umask=700 0 0
it gives me error about permission every time i try to extract files to drive.

This is because you are trying to access files that root is in control of.
Try copying the file to your home folder or your desktop and then extract the files.
