wifi drops more frequently over time xubuntu16.04

After a clean install of xubuntu16.04 64bit over a previous xubuntu 14.04.5 that the desktop had died:
the system's wifi starts dropping more frequency over time until wifi refuses to connect.
Previous 14.04.5 used to work and did not drop out.

system will lose SSID
and will eventually hard lock between 700-950 seconds of uptime

RAM has checked,
DVD install media has been checksummed
