Can I run Ubunto on my 2007 iMac?

Asked by Emily

Hey guys,

I have an ancient little iMac so old that the security number is just a 1. It's fine for basic stuff but performance is painstakingly slow and I've always wanted to try a Linux system.

Hokay so I have a 2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo iMac with 1 GB, 667 MHz, currently running 10.6.3.

I know. Bear with me.

1. Would I be able to install Ubunto onto this thing? Do I have enough GB?
2. I am a virgin Ubunto user, would I need to install Lubunto? Like is that more light-weight?
3. Will system performance be okay? Or will I be stuck and still unable to download certain updates and applications?

I am lost, I am confused, and I can't even download Google Chrome.

With love and admiration to all helpful responders~

Know nothing about MACs. I think you could run Xubuntu or Lubuntu. Both require less resources than Ubuntu. If your iMAC is 32 bit, Chrome uses only 64 bit. I have heard a rumor, that Ubuntu will be going to only 64 bit after 16.10. Have not been able to verify if this is true. Have not found out if this will effect Xubuntu and Lubuntu, or not. I believe that Lubuntu 16.04 would be best.

Try Lubuntu 16.04 in Live CD / USB and see how it runs
