updating Oracle java7 to java 8

Asked by davidzaq1

Hello,

I was updating the Oracle java from version 7 to 8. While the terminal was installing, I received this message:

Unknown media type in type 'all/all'
Unknown media type in type 'all/allfiles'
Unknown media type in type 'uri/mms'
Unknown media type in type 'uri/mmst'
Unknown media type in type 'uri/mmsu'
Unknown media type in type 'uri/pnm'
Unknown media type in type 'uri/rtspt'
Unknown media type in type 'uri/rtspu'

Can you tell me why it does not know why Ubuntu does not recognize the media and if there is a way to fix this?

Thank you,
David

This is a well know message that does not do any harm. It is related to some inconsistencies in the shared-mime-info data.
See Bug #289592

You can safely ignore these lines.

How did you install the Oracle Java 7?
How did you initiate the upgrade?

Thanks

Hello,

I used the following commands.

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:webupd8team/java
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install oracle-java8-installer

The internet seems to be running a little slower since the update. Maybe I did something wrong or maybe java 9
is not compatible with 14.04. I am not sure.

I look forward to your help.

Thank you

Does Java 8 not do what you need?

I do not know what it is supposed to do. I just wanted to update to just to update it. I thought it would make things work better.
I do not know if java 7 or 8 is better or if it even makes a difference.

I mainly was updating Java and Flash to see if youtube would load better and play without glitching all the time.

If you know of something to help with this please let me know.
Otherwise I will just close this post.

Thank you,
David

On my 14.04, the browser makes the difference, on how YouTube works. On Firefox and Chromium it works fine. Opera and QupZilla do not. Do not use Chrome. Chrome should work as it uses difference flash. As for Java, I only have 6 and 7 installed.

Thank you for the information but this does not answer my question. I am still confused.

What is now your question?

The original question ("Unknown media type in type 'all/all'") is a known but harmless problem that you can safely ignore.

I would not expect to see much difference in behavior between Java 6, Java 7 and Java 8 when installed on the same system.
