wireless problem ubuntu 8.04

Asked by logand21

i am new to the Linux world so any help would be great. I used the live cd on my laptop and an icon appeared in the corner telling me about propietary drivers. I connected the laptop to a wired connection then enabled the broadcom driver. It downloaded ok and installed. The internet worked fine, everything else ran good o i decided to install the os to the hard drive. upon installing the os, i did not get the icon telling me about the drivers needed and i am unable to connect to any wireless network although was wired, the internet works fine. i spent a few hours looking around tring to find ways to get this work but i have failed. I ask for any help that you can offer in this regard. is there a way to install the broadcom drivers without the icon in the corner? i go to hardware drivers under system and it is not listed. any other information needed can be supplied. thank you.

Can you run this in a terminal (Application menu, Accessories) window so that we can see what the wireless is being detected as.

lspci | grep net

Make sure your wireless card is switched on (sometimes in a laptop there's a button to switch it on)

i finally got it working. I reinstalled the whole os again and enable the universe repositories (thought i had done that earlier but i did not). i then went to terminal and installed the b43-fwcutter driver. After that was installed, the braodcom driver appeared in the hardware list under System>Admin>Hardware drivers. i then enabled it. After enabling the driver, the network manager icon showed many networks that i could connect to, i have never reached this step before. i then connected to my network which uses wpa personal and its been working ever since. the signal strenght is not the best but its about the same as my ps3 located in the same place so i can't complain. Thanks for your help, i got this idea from reading more of the answers on this site. Keep up the good work.
