Hi,
Please note that while you may notice slight performance boosts with the 64-bit version of Ubuntu, there are some limitations on certain software currently which are not available. I use it and do not have a problem. However, if you would like to have the Adobe Flash Player or the Sun Java Plugin for Firefox, you need to install the 32-bit version of Firefox, which isn't as simple as installing most other software. Chances are you are not going to notice that much of a difference between the 32-bit and the 64-bit version of Ubuntu. Unless you are going to be doing a lot of processor intensive operations, I suggest you stay with the 32-bit version of Ubuntu. Hopefully support for 64-bit software will be better in the future as more people start to buy computers with 64-bit capable processors.

Oh, just another note as an extension of my previous comment:
The reason that there are currently no 64-bit versions of Adobe Flash Player and Sun's Java Plugin is because both are binary releases by Adobe and Sun. They do not give out the source for the programs and so it is up to their discretion whether or not to provide support for 64-bit Linux Distributions. Sun recently announced that their Java VM would be released under the GPL license, which will probably expedite the process for a 64-bit Java Plugin. When the complete source is released, Linux developers will be able to modify the code to allow for Linux better support.

Hi,

In reading the response, i am not interested in the surfing aspect, or adobe file viewing, but wish to perform some math intensive programming. As such i was going to install 64bit Feisty Fawn. When i chosse the 64bit Intel platform, i am directed to the AMD iso file download. Is this correct, in that the AMD downlaod will work on the Core 2 Duo 6400 processor by Inel ?.

Thanks.

Regards,

Richard.....
