16.10 Installer crashes on Dell Inspiron 15 7579

Asked by Austin

I'm trying to install ubuntu alongside windows 10 on my new laptop, but the installer crashes.

I've tried multiple times, with and without secureboot.

The error I get is something along the lines of "executing grub-install failed".

Does anybody know how I can fix this?

Did you MD5 test the ISO you downloaded?
How did you transfer it to the installation media?
If you burned a DVD/CD did you burn as slowly as possible?

Hi actionparsnip,

1. I've confirmed that the MD5 sums match.

2. I've transferred it to a usb drive using Universal Usb Installer. I'll try again with the Rufus USB tool to confirm my error is consistent. My laptop doesn't have an optical drive, so I'd need to buy more hardware to use anything but a USB.

Please let me know if you have any more questions

Just tried writing a new bootable USB using Rufus USB in dd mode

The install continued indefinitely - I kept getting an error in the console saying "FAT-fs error invalid access to FAT," which is interesting, when you consider that the only FAT partition was my USB disk.

It just kept giving that error, so I stopped the installation, and now my Windows partition is screwed up. Luckily I made a recovery disk so this shouldn't be too bad.

I would just completely axe windows, but unfortunately I need it for work.
