System won't upgrade
Hello, I am trying to do a system upgrade from 14.04 up to 16,04. I was going to upgrade one step at a time.
I did the command do-release.
The result came back "no new releases available". I know there are different releases so why does the system say there
is nothing new to upgrade to?
Is thee a way to fix this?
Thank you

There is only one step, to upgrade the system. You can (should) backup your data prior to the change but otherwise it's one step
sudo do-release-upgrade
will kick off the action
Can you please give the full output, as well as the output of:
lsb_release -a; uname -a
Thanks

Hello,
Thank you for the reply.
as for the command: sudo do-release-upgrade
I have tried this and the reply that comes back is "no available upgrades available"
I do not know why. I was just trying to upgrade one step at a time until I got up to 16.04 but nothing happens.
I suppose I could just get thee disk and do a fresh install but I thought if I do one step at a time, I won't lose
files I have on the computer at this point.
Here is the full output of above command.
$ lsb_release -a; uname -a

The message "current dist name: 'trusty'

'trusty' should be found in the meta-release file.

Also, just to let you know, I keep getting a message, "ubuntu has experienced an error or serious error".
I send a report each time it comes up. Which is not all the time but sometimes. I do not know if this error has anything to do with
the system not being able to update but jut wanted to add this to the notes.
Thank you

The information provided by you is contradictory.
The meta-release-lts file is shown to have 2717 bytes size, but your output of the command to list its contents was empty.
I have to repeat my request from above:
What is the output of the command
tail -n 20 /home/stan/
And to the other problem: What is the name of the failing package in the message "ubuntu has experienced an error or serious error"?

Hello,
I do not know what is happening to the outputs but I ran the command above again and here is the output.
As far as the system problems, I have not seen another error recently so I cannot post it here but if I get another message, I'll post it.
Here is the output:
$ tail -n 20 /home/stan/

This is not the expected contents of meta-release-lts, but seems to be some web page that is sent by the web proxy (probably a Public one, maybe at a Starbuck's) if you haven't authenticated or not accepted the license terms.
I suggest you delete that file an re-try the release upgrade.
Try
rm /home/stan/
DEBUG_UPDATE_
What do you get now?

Hello,
Thank you for your reply.
Well, this one seemed to get things rolling and it seemed it was going to install the 16.04 package. It got started but shortly afterwards, it abandoned the upgrade. Maybe you can find the problem here. I copied the whole output.
I do spend a lot of my time at Starbucks as I do not have interenet at home and so I work on my laptop a lot.
I download and update my system on Starbucks internet and have not had a problem before. But if looks like it is a problem after you read the output, the I can try to go to a different place.

I am glad to hear that the cause for your problem finally has been found.
The new problem is something what I have never seen so far.
You might try uninstalling gstreamer1.0-vaapi before the upgrade attempt. Maybe that helps.
(Note, adding the DEBUG code should no more be necessary, you can now use just "do-release-

Hello,
Thank you for your help.
I do not know how to do the step below.

What are the steps to do this and will it cause any problems with my system?

For evaluating the effects of uninstalling that package please provide the output of the following commands:
apt-cache policy gstreamer1.0-vaapi
apt-get --simulate remove gstreamer1.0-vaapi
(That package is related to audit/video codecs, and I am will quite sure that removing it will not cause problems.)

Hello,
Ok hare is the output from the first command:
~$ apt-cache policy gstreamer1.0-vaapi
gstreamer1.0-vaapi:
Installed: 0.5.7-0ubuntu4
Candidate: 0.5.7-0ubuntu4
Version table:
*** 0.5.7-0ubuntu4 0
500 http://
100 /var/lib/
stan@Roo:~$
Here is the one from the second command:
~$ apt-get --simulate remove gstreamer1.0-vaapi
NOTE: This is only a simulation!
apt-get needs root privileges for real execution.
Keep also in mind that locking is deactivated,
so don't depend on the relevance to the real current situation!

I hope this helps.
I hope it will not cause a problem to remove the package.
If it does, then I guess I will have to do a fresh install of 16.04 from a disk.
Also, I was wondering, do I really need to update the system to 16.04
or is it ok to keep 14.04 until it is no longer supported?
Does it make a difference?
Thank you.

There is no immediate need to upgrade from 14.04 to 16.04.
Support for 14.04 will be until April 2019.
16.04 will be supported until April 2021, and contains several updated package versions.
It is your choice.
I do not expect any problem from removing gstreamer1.0-vaapi, no other packages depend on it, and I assume that you never really needed that package.
I would suggest removing it with the command
sudo apt-get purge gstreamer1.0-vaapi
and I recommend that you do a cleanup by uninstalling the obsolete packages that were listed in the last apt-get output with the command
sudo apt-get --purge autoremove
