my operating system is probably crashed during updatation (ubuntu14.04 to 15.10). i have to move some important files but those are now not readable using a live cd. how can i move my files?

Asked by Anirban Dey

1. during the last step of direct updatation of ubuntu14.04 to 15.10 through internet , i have accidentally switched off my machine. after that my machine is not starting properly.
2. i have tried ubuntu live cd to move my all important documents, pictures and other files to other storage systems (usb, other hard disk, dvd), but unfortunately this process is not working.
3. i have disconnected my hdd from my laptop and attached it with another machine, so that i can move my files, but this process is also not working.
4. when using ubuntu live cd version, for some of the files, there is a message on the screen "file is not readable".

You can't update to 15.10 from 14.04

From 14.04,you should only upgrade to the next LTS release (16.04) or the next release, or to the next release from the one you are on, which would be 14.10

Both 14.10 and 15.10 are no longer supported and there are no packages for either do you wouldn't be able to upgrade to either of these online.

Why did you not make a full backup using the functional OS before you started such a massive system change? Why do you not have a regular backup if the data is important?

What if the drive you are using fails? Where is your data then? Are you this careless with important data? Doesn't sound important at all

You may be able to resolve the issue by running a full fsck on the partition in live CD. The partition will need to be unmounted for this to work

Can you help with this problem?
