problem booting from USB

Asked by bhuvan

Hi,

Wonder if someone could help.
I have installed Lubuntu 16.04 from usb onto my netbook Advent 4213.
Since installing this I have had problem booting from a usb. I have tried booting from usb into peppermint OS and Ubuntu but everytime get booted into Lubuntu. Even after I go into boot screen and choose usb boot it still ignores everything and boots directly into Lubuntu.
It seems that by installing Lubuntu, Lubuntu has hijacked the bios and doesnt allow it to choose any other boot.
I have noticed this with another machine where i installed peppermint 6 into a different machine and now that machine doesnt seem to be allowing me to boot from usb.
I have in the past changed Linux version from ubuntu to linux mint to peppermint to lubuntu and never had these problem.
Please help so that i can try out different OS running them live usb.
The USB is fine as I have used it to run live system on different computers.

Thanks

Did you MD5 test the ISO you downloaded?
How did you put the data onto the USB stick?

Hi,

I have just checked the MD5 of the file I downloaded and it is correct and matches with the source file. Thanks as in proces I learnt how to check MD5 of the files .
I used unetbootin to install the downloaded file onto usb stick.
This is a problem I have had recently after installing new version of lubuntu and peppermint 6. before that i had peppermint 3 on my netbook and had no problem and on the other computer before peppermin6 i had linux mint installed and had no problem.

Thanks for you answer.

You could try using dd to put the ISO on the USB
Check your BIOS is set to boot USB first

Hi,

I tried to go to bios menu to change booting order but it automatically goes to grub and wouldn't let me go to bios menu at all on my netbook. so using f11 i managed to reach boot menu and tried enter button after selecting usb. it still automatically goes to the installed lubuntu boot rather than booting from usb.

The other computer where peppermint 6 is installed i managed to reach BIOS and change boot order with usb as preferred and still it automatically booted from installed version instead.

Just seems like it is hijacking the boot menu in BIOS or infact acting like Windows and forcing the computer to instead boot from installed OS.

If i can somehow force the computer to boot from usb then i might be able to change the OS to different version.

Your help is appreciated.

Thanks

Hi Do not know how to use dd method. looks complicated. Is there a way to download a different iso in lubuntu computer and then mounting it using terminal and then instaliing it while it is mounted without using the usb at all ?

Thanks

If you search the Dash for "startup" I believe Ubuntu still comes with a tool for this by default
