after ubuntu-gnome-desktop installed no wired internet

Asked by RIchard Seitz

I first install ubuntu 16.10 and installed updates on first day of release, I then went to install the ubuntu-gnome-desktop and lost my wired connect i could look at see the connection using different utils, but what i got was no wireless connection in the I found a way to add it back, but then it was an unmanaged connection and I could not see it in the setting network configuration, when i tried to add the connection, it did not appear as an option. I think this is a bug,, but cannot add it to bugs as I cannot get a way to connect after I install ubuntu-gnome-desktop. I have a realtek 8111 wired controller as shown from the last section lsmod below. The r1869 driver for it. When I add it and connect a plug in cable it somehow causes a loop in the wireless connection. ny question please ask me, i tried to incluse al that happened and this happened before i installed the nvidia driver.

I want a wired connection, specifically for speed purposes. My output for ifconfig is;

enp2s0: flags=4163<UP,BROADCAST,RUNNING,MULTICAST> mtu 1500
        inet 192.168.0.23 netmask 255.255.255.0 broadcast 192.168.0.255

        RX errors 0 dropped 0 overruns 0 frame 0
        TX packets 642352 bytes 39874161 (39.8 MB)
        TX errors 0 dropped 0 overruns 0 carrier 0 collisions 0

wlp6s0: flags=4099<UP,BROADCAST,MULTICAST> mtu 1500
        ether 80:a5:89:6d:82:4b txqueuelen 1000 (Ethernet)

        RX errors 0 dropped 0 overruns 0 frame 0
        TX packets 0 bytes 0 (0.0 B)

But this is since I reinstalled ubuntu and have not tried to install ubuntu-gnome-desktop again. Here was my ip link after I installed ubuntu-gnome-desktop the first time

There was no way to add the connection in the settings pane. when i ran ip link the result was;

1: lo: <LOOPBACK,UP,LOWER_UP> mtu 65536 qdisc noqueue state UNKNOWN mode DEFAULT group default qlen 1 link/loopback 00:00:00:00:00:00 brd 00:00:00:00:00:00
2: enp2s0: <NO-CARRIER,BROADCAST,MULTICAST,UP> mtu 1500 qdisc pfifo_fast state DOWN mode DEFAULT group default qlen 1000 link/ether 14:dd:a9:4f:7b:1c brd ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff
3: wlp6s0: <BROADCAST,MULTICAST,UP,LOWER_UP> mtu 1500 qdisc mq state UP mode DORMANT group default qlen 1000 link/ether 80:a5:89:6d:82:4b brd ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff

Now with this ip link enp2s0 had no cable connected, when i connected a cable it locked up and network connection and I had now way of getting on the internet.

I prefer the ubuntu-gnome-desktop more, but I also tried to install ubuntu-gnome and got the same result. as above and could not get on the internet until i unplugged the ethernet cable. hope this helps. I would really like to get back to the gnome-desktop.

Thanks for the feedback.

Another thing is one time I just installed cairo-dock with ubuntu and got the same result where I lost my wired connection. SO it lead me to believe there is a bug in the cairo-dock installtion, don't know how that would cause this to happen but it did. I spent 16 hours that day trying to figure out what happen. if you need me to install ubuntu and the the ubuntu-gnome-desktop for a better result I can do that. I can add a minimal second boot to the hard drive just let me know.

Sorry, but I have no experience with a strange effect like yours: "adding an additional package kills the network connection".

Just some ideas what could be done:
check the system logs whether there are error messages about networking
reinstall the network management programs
restart the router
