I need help installing Ubuntu/Linux. Please Help.

Asked by KempM94

I have three partitions. The first and largest partition is for Windows XP Home Edition. The second partition I made is for Ubuntu/Linux. The third partition is for Unix.
I am currently working on trying to install Ubuntu into windows. This is what I do: First I log into Windows. Next I insert the Ubuntu/Linux Boot Disk. A window pops up and says would you like to run Ubuntu in windows. I say yes. So then it installs. It tells me to take out the disk then it reboots, it comes back up and I log into Ubuntu. Then a window pops up and tries to finish installing but it can't, it freezes and a little window pops up and says: No root file system is defined. Please correct this from the partitioning menu. There is a little button at the bottom that says ok with an arrow pointing left. I click ok although the same window keeps coming back up. Thats the end of my story.

I can't figure it out please help.

Hello,
Which method did you use to partition your hard disk drive? if you used manual, do you have a / root one?

The best way is to have a second HDD for Ubuntu. But you have already set up. The best way in this case would have been to let Ubuntu partition it for you. If you had only the 1 for XP it would set it up. You just have to tell it how much you would like to give Ubuntu, The option is on the left (of the install box inside windows were it asks you for you details ie password, Name etc) there you can opt for I think 4 - 30 GB for Ubuntu,
If you boot from the Disc and install it that way, again you can dictate how much for XP & Ubuntu.

When you did the install did you "ask" it to install into the partition you set aside for Ubuntu?
and the size to match? not sure but my be part of the problem.
The first time I install Ubuntu I used the install from inside windows ( from XP) way. It worked ok, I told it to install in the same partition as the Vista was on, so it should work for you , strange problem you have.
Hmm just thought of something what format was the partition? NTFS or other? again maybe important mine was an NTFS because of Vista, (if it was partitioned for Linux ext3 for example windows wont find it has to be one of the Fat system or NTFS)
But the best way is to boot from the disc it will give you the option to install or to use live cd were you can install as well.
Sorry I could answer your question directly. But I have found that just getting other peoples way of doing thing to be of a help.
As for Unix sorry I'm no help there not tried it (yet!! lol)
I hope all this driple is of some help to you anyway
Regards Neil
