Software Updater hangs in 16.04.1

Asked by Rollo Handy

A new install of a 64-bit 16.04.1 seems successful, except for a Software Updater problem. When I attempt to check for updates, the Software Updater appears to run normally until it a message states it is "finished." But then nothing further happens, and the updater box continues to show on the screen. The 16.04.1 installation is on a HP Compaq 6515b laptop; dual-boot with Windows 10.

If you close Software Centre then open a terminal and run:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
sudo reboot

Does it help once the system comes back up?

Thanks for your help. I believe progress has been made, because now
when I run "about this computer" after checking for updates, I am told
"System Up-to-Date." Unfortunately, when I run I run the Software
Updater from the Launcher, it hangs at the point 'Downloading from
security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu.' See the attachment for both results.

Replying to the automated email and attaching a file doesn't work. Just paste the text as an update on:

Thanks

The About This Computer, after 'Checking for Updates" reports "Systen Up-To-Date,' which seems very promising. However, when I run Software Updater from the Launcher, it proceeds in what I believe is the normal way, until it says "Downloading from security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu." Then it just hangs there until I turn off the computer, instead of saying, for example, "Computer up-to-date."

Try:

cd ~/.config
mv software-center software-center.old

Then rerun the Software Centre

it turns out ny .config folder has NO software-center file. Perhaps this is related to my main problem. In any event, I have just used the software center successfully to add Synaptics
