Unable to login after 16.04 upgrade failed.

Asked by Deval Gohil

I tried upgrading from 14.04 to 16.04 but came across few errors. It showed eventually that installation has been completed however it dint ask to restart so did manually. It dint restart too. Tried restarting it 2-3 times after which it showed a black window with 4 options as mentioned below.

Ubuntu
Advanced Options for Ubuntu
System Setup
Restore Ubuntu 14.04 to Factory State.

Now if I try last option than I will losse my data which is my concern. Please suggest how I can get back 14.04 without loosing my data or install 16.04 successfully ?

I think there is a similar issue already posted by Oxman. Summary - 402382. I dnt have the scripts or list of errors encountered though...

On that scree with four options, what do you get if you navigate to the first line (with up/down keys) and press the return key?

When I click on 1st option it does nothing but just shows a complete black screen for long time..

When clicked 2nd option it shows
"Ubuntu, with Linux 4.4.0-40-generic
Ubuntu, with Linux 4.4.0-40-generic (safe mode)
and similarly for Linux 3.13.0-93 , 3.13.0-92, 3.13.0-76 & 3.13.0-38..."

System Setup option shows Dell Inspiron 5558 i3's system congratulations...

And last option shows a Dell Recovery window with the below message:
"This Dell Recovery Media can be used to restore the original factory software. It is recommended you back up all important data before running this tool.
Restore Linux OS partitions.(Box to check)
This will rebuild all OS and swap partitions to factory defaults.
Warning: All personal files and changes will be lost."

Hope this is what you need. Also is their an option here for attachment ?

If you try the second item on the first screen (Advanced Options for Ubuntu), and then the first one (Ubuntu, with Linux 4.4.0-40-generic) on the next screen, do you get the sam black screen forever?

If you select the second on the first and the second on the second screen, what do you get then?

If you are concerned about your data, why don't you have a backup??

Using a special boot mode from the advanced options will not affect your data.
Only the "Restore Ubuntu 14.04 to Factory State" will delete them all.

If you are so concerned about your data, don't you have a current backup copy on another medium?
What would you do in case of a hardware problem on the hard disk?

I am not Ubuntu friendly and also missed to take backup of my data. That's my bad.
Could you pls tell how can I take backup as well as get back to 14.04 ?
Shall I click on "Ubuntu, with Linux 4.4.0-40-generic" n see what it does ?

I suggest that you try both options

Ubuntu, with Linux 4.4.0-40-generic
Ubuntu, with Linux 4.4.0-40-generic (safe mode)

to check whether one of them allows you to start the operating system.

If you cannot boot the Ubuntu system on your hard disk, then you have to use a live system from an installation kit to access your data.

You have to create a DVD or a bootable USB stick with the Ubuntu installation kit, as described on http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop (below the heading "Easy ways to switch to Ubuntu")

And then you have to boot from this medium and select "Try Ubuntu without installing".
This should then allow accessing all data on the hard disk partitions.

Boot to Live CD / USB and you can access the data. Anyone can copy and paste files to a cheap USB storage. I suggest you take greater care of your data if it is important to you

Can you help with this problem?
