kmail message list font is too small and can't be changed

I've been using Kontact/KMail for years and haven't had any compelling reason to use Thunderbird. However, I've just upgraded to Lubuntu 16.04 and the text in the message list is far too small and doesn't respond to font size changes. Folder list and message body do, however.
