Ubuntu 8.04 Cannot Edit Users & Groups

Asked by Bruisedquasar08

Just installed Ubuntu 8.04 LTS Desktop. Cannot edit "Users and Groups." Shows only one user, no groups. My one user account has administrative permissions. Can do no editing at all. Cannot edit permissions for my single account, nothing. The command buttons are very light. I can navagate the main menu ("properties", etc) but I can do nothing. Thought it odd that unlike earlier versions of Ubuntu the user list contained more, not just one superuser user and password & "root" (light so I cannot enter that account either.

The Users and Groups icon is odd. It has a large red '1' or 'I' over the right side.

Any ideas?

I had no idea what the "unlock" was for. I already tried it but I got an "unknown" error message.

Knowing what the "unlock" box was for (from Ravitz) led to my working on it. My problem turned out to be 1) I did not know what "unlock" was for and 2) not knowing I must click "unlock" with my user name highlighted.

Thanks Ravitz for sending me back to "unlock" Unlock solved my problem. I have full control over "Users @ Groups".
