8.04 installation problem

Asked by jenniferbrugman

Ok, I was trying install 804 from 710 and I ran into a couple problems. 1) HAL won't initialize. Everytime I try fix that I get to the point where it generates locales 2.7.9-4 and then it gets stuck on generating en-AU.UTF-8. 2) Next, I have tried to solve the "'dpkg --configure -a' problem when trying to run Synaptic." I have tried everything I had read in the forums to fix that problem but nothing works. Please help.

I can boot up in Gnome failsafe to try to take care of these problems but nothing seems to be happening. I tried to reinstall 7.04 to wipe the drive and start over. That did not work. I cannot use the internet and yes, I am not entirely sure what I am doing. How do I fix this? Anyone?

When you say you tried to install 7.04 to start again, is that a typo and you mean 8.04?
You say that doesn't work, are you using the live install CD or the alternate install CD?
Can you document exactly what you're doing and what errors you're getting?

To view your actual release please open a Terminal from the menu Applications->Accessories->Terminal type:

cat /etc/lsb-release

Then to be sure your release is fully upgraded type:

sudo apt-get -f install

Please give your user password when requested, you don't see nothing when you type it, then press enter.

Then try to upgrade:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
sudo apt-get clean
sudo apt-get autoremove

and to upgrade to the release

sudo do-release-upgrade

Hope this helps

Thanks marcobra, I tried your suggestion. However, after I got to sudo apt-get -f install. I recieved the message that dkpg was not installed. I tried to install that with: dpkg --configure -a. It did not work. I entered my password, but again. Nothing. A friend is sending me XUbuntu in the mail. that should solve my problem. I hope. But thanks for all the help!

rajdamu,

I had a friend send me a CD of XUbuntu 8.04 and installed that. It wiped out everything but now I can use my computer again, which is nice. I hope that helps.
