it's ok

you have to patition your hard drive to minimum of three partitions

1- winXP
2- Ubuntu
3- Swap partition (used by ubuntu) 1 Gb is ok for this partition

after the installation, when you boot, you'll have automatically the choice bw using windows or ubuntu

Good Luck

Yes, it's OK to install Ubuntu in your system with Windows XP already installed. You just need to prepare an empty partition for root filesystem of Ubuntu and an empty partition for swap (usually two times from of your phisycal memory / RAM). The root filesystem needs to be formatted as ext3 (you may use software like Partition Magic from Windows or use the installer itself).

just boot in the ubuntu CD and install
in the installation choose resize partition option
ubuntu will detect your Windows and install the grub loader in dual-boot mode

Yes, no problem - it's possible to have two operating systems on one computer. many people have a dualboot (Windows and Ubuntu).
