Recover files from damaged hard drive

Asked by Ampers

PREABLE
In another life, when I used Windows, there was a SysInternal utility that allowed me to boot into DOS and recover nearly all my files in a trashed hard drive.

SOLUTION REQUIRED
Is there any Linux solution which will do something similar.

PAIN
In this hard drive I have 250 CDs of my music - however these can be replaced but took three days to build up. However the 72GB of my precious photographs cannot be replaced.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hello Ampers:

If you have ext 3 partition you can use gddrescue for instance

Greetings Bhavani,

Thank you for that. I downloaded it onto my PC first but couldn't find it in any of the applications folders, then I followed your link. I read the info briefly, am now downloading the ISO file which I will burn onto a CD.

Tomorrow I will print out that help page, and take it from there.

If it works, or if it doesn't, I will report back here in a few days (I want to take my time, 72GB of photographs needs a lot of caution).

Thanks a lot.

Ampers.

No, too complex and I have lost my photographs. Have a few backups and the important ones are in albums on the Internet, and I have a lot of physical photographs, so all is not list.

Thanks for trying anyway.

I guess Sysinternals were too good - probably why Microsoft bought their company. Now if only they were using Linux

The day Microsoft Announced the purchase of Winternals - the main company - and because 95% of their products were free, I decided to download the entire stock in case MS closed down the freebees. I couldn't get on to the server for five days!!! Everyone else had the same idea.
