How to see recovered/mounted files on Ubuntu 8.04

Asked by Rachelle

My Windows XP not bootable. I booted from a Ubuntu 8.04 (running from CD only) and mounted my /dev/sda1 partition. Unfortunately, after it was mounted, I cannot seem to see any files. I am able to see all the Windows folders and the folders I created but none of the files in them. For example, any pictures I want to get off, I can see My Pictures -> Pictures 2007 -> Holidays 2007 -> (No pictures/filenames). I thought I would be able to see them after mounting? Any suggestions? Is this a permissions problem or does it mean all my files are deleted??

Unfortunately, I think due to a problem in windows your personal files are deleted because even ntfs partition files are completely readable/writeable in ubuntu hardy (ubuntu by default includes support for FAT partitions also)

Is there any way to recover the deleted files?

If I understand you correctly, you have booted from an Ubuntu 8.04 live CD to try and rescue a non-bootable XP system. (I assume you did not install Ubuntu on it.) Recently I gave my step-daughter a live CD to recover files from a non-bootable XP disc, and she was successful in copying files from the XP disc to her USB stick. It is most likely that your XP system was seriously damaged some how. This, of course, is an XP problem and we are not primarily XP experts. One thing I can say is that it is not a permissions problem. The routines that read NTFS file systems will mount them with all files owned by the current user.

There are data recovery specialist and some computer stores will do this work, but it can be expensive :(

How is it that the folders are still available but not any of the files?

As I said before, that is an XP problem. Perhaps the file indexes are corrupted.

Can you help with this problem?
