unable to log on to the internet. A - "we're sorry but unable to complete your online registration at this time" or words to that effect - message appears when you attempt to go online with the built-in Firefox and an 800 number to my ISP also appears. They don't know what I'm talking about. The connections are fine and working. My internet connection is fine. The modem lights change appropriately depending on whether the Unix computer is operating or off. My other ( Windows) computer times out at near T1 speeds on the same connection. I'm not using wirelss or a router. direct from cable into modem into box. The cable modem was flushed and reset from the ISP server and my Windows machine can set up a new connection with no trouble both after deleting the old one or continuing to use it after disabling it and then reactivating.
My Ubuntu machine has a large hard drive and plenty of ram and I decided to make Ubunto the only OS on it so the macine doesn't have an old OS of another flavor with which I can connect to the internet and register my ISO mirror download which I successfully installed from CD.

I attempted to run a PPPoe configuration file or something similar I've found in the help lists and it says I must be "root" although whether using "sudo" or "sudo_root seems to make little difference if "no command found". Thanks_
