how does ubuntu work?
If i download ubuntu and install it, what happens then? is it an OS or just a program which i run from my desktop? Im still a bit confused.. im running vista ultimate 64 bit atm, when i install ubuntu will it dual boot or will it just be executable from my desktop on vista?

It is an OS not an application.
If you have installed it inside Vista (using "Wubi"), it *looks* like an application install but it actually modifies the Windows c:\boot.ini to load from a .mbr file in your C: root on the NTFS partition.
It then runs inside a dedicated reserved space within your windows partition but runs separately from Windows.
The Windows files are accessible through the \host folder in Ubuntu.

Yes, you do.
You will have the choice between Vista and Ubuntu when you (re)start your computer.

Yes, no problem - it's possible to have two operating systems on one computer. many people have a dualboot (Windows and Ubuntu).
