Slow Torrent Downloads

Asked by thehandicapspot

I cannot seem to get steady or fast torrent downloads. They seem to hover anywhere from 10kb/s to 30kb/s.
I have Ktorrent program and have Ubuntu 7.10 Gutsy.
I also have no idea what are the best ports to use to download and upload and how to change ports. Please help. Thanks.

Port choice shouldn't affect speed accepting some clients block certain default ports. I doubt this is you problem. Limiting upload speeds will slow download speeds. Torrents depend on the upload capacity of the person sharing the file - which varies. Try checking your speeds pulling a torrent with fast seeders - like for example a linux iso.

It really depends on the amount of people seeding if 50 people are seeding and you are downloading for 25 the you will get fast downloads but if you are downloading from 1 (even if they have a high enough bandwidth) you will get a reduced speed.

Hope that helps

Hi again. You are probably using a router that has not been correctly configured, so no matter how much you fiddle with ports it will make no difference until you follow the advice Bhavani Shankar gave you here:- https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/39819

Can you help with this problem?
