New ubuntu install doe's not play DVD.

Asked by barry

My name is Barry I live in Troutdale Oregon, USA.
I'm using a Toshiba Satellite M115-S3154. It has Windowe XP, I have recently loaded LINUX from the Linux Stater Pack, successfully I think.
I followed the procedure for loading the Codec"VLC", but find that when I insert a DVD it does not play. I followed the procedure to open the VLC program pressed Play then Disk, sometimes Totem will appear and I can close it other times it locks the computor up and I have do a full power down and restart the computor. atno time have I seen any idication that the movie is going to play. I do see an icon on my desktop with the name of the movie under it, if I eject the DVD the icon diappears.
I may have done something dumb but can't see what.

Thanks

Barry

I followed the instructions but the DVD will still not play, basicly the same thing happens. If I double click the icon the "cdromo- file browser opens up.

Update on my previous note :- Soung is there but at a very low level, I think that this problem is from when I originally loaded Linux. I have noticed that as Linux is loading the sound level of any tones is very low.

Thanks
Barry

Double click the volume icon top right of your screen, and turn the levels up - particularly PCM.
