menu-xdg is a package of an open source application. If you're interested in
knowing whether it's harmful, download the source code and see for yourself.

Hello

If it's on a Canonical Repo, I'm fairly certain it's free of malicious code.

Any third-party repos, I'd suggest only using those that are trusted.

Other than that, use common sense prior to adding any unknown or unfamiliar repos and installing software from them

and AFAIK Ubuntu comes with no warranty at all, you use it at your own risk.
Most of the software in the repositories has been there for years, it would be foolish to add malicious code to a program and then publish it. It won't take long until someone notices it.... :)

You can check for system integrity after package has been downloaded

http://packages.ubuntu.com/hardy/debian-installer/system-integrity-check

sudo apt-get install system-integrity-check

more info read the man pages

man system-integrity-check

regards
