SSD frozen state WRITE DMA, invalid CHS sector 0, Sandisk 128GB

Asked by Galen Thurber

 SanDisk SD8SBAT128G1122
has been reporting errors for months
such as

[ 9627.872027] ata3.00: exception Emask 0x0 SAct 0x0 SErr 0x0 action 0x6 frozen
[ 9627.872036] ata3.00: failed command: WRITE DMA

[ 9627.872043] res 40/00:00:00:4f:c2/00:00:00:00:00/00 Emask 0x4 (timeout)
[ 9627.872046] ata3.00: status: { DRDY }
[ 9627.872051] ata3: hard resetting link
[ 9628.364022] ata3: SATA link up 1.5 Gbps (SStatus 113 SControl 300)

[ 9628.388011] ata3.00: device reported invalid CHS sector 0
[ 9628.388021] ata3: EH complete

The SSD was new from a reliable source and I replaced power and SATA cables with known to be good cables as well.
My system will pause and through the above error.
gsmartcontrol reports still reports no errors after months of checking the SSD.
It does report "Error in ATA Error Log structure: checksum error"
I runs in a open case with nothing hot near it.
The motherboard SATA does 150 not 300 speed.

Any ideas welcome.

solved.

BIOS defaulted to emulate PATA mode,
