Changing permissions of 'user' & 'user/home' from terminal

hi,
i was a window user now using UBUNTU (daily updated) and had accidentally changed file permission of user and its sub directories and now this is a great trouble to me as i am a begginer for ubuntu please help me.
the sytem after restarting after looging in gives message '.../.ICEauthority' file cannot be writeable (some kind of like that) please reprort as a GNOME bug. and then comes back to the login window.

my precious data is in the drive and i cant format it just want to start ubuntu to its previous condition.

i know this is because i changed the file permission so please their is any way to get back those permission please tell me in the way as a window user. so that its easy for me to do.

Alt+f2
sudo nautilus Hit the box to run in terminal
Find the folder you want to change the permissions of hit properties and then permissions
But you shouldnt need to do that anyway there is a reason that root has permissions in the major folders

I wouldn't change permissions on folders in the directory hierarchy that is not in your home folder. Most of this stuff is owned by root for security and accessibility purposes. If you want to make a new folder in /usr, you should create it as root, then chown it for your username, or set read/write permissions on it for World.
What folder are you trying to create? That is not a normal place to create directories.

Though somehow you don't know how to access as root?

Not meaning to insult... just be careful... many times an innocent move will have devastating consequences...
