ubuntu 8.04 on school network doesn't work

Asked by shinyisme

I'm on a school network and am trying to get firefox to work. The weird thing is I can get aim to work with the built in instant messaging program, but when i try to use firefox it goes to an error page from our net nanny. It's not really called that it does say puma a lot though. I put in my hostname and domain name, I just don't know how to authenticate as myself everytime I try to use firefox. I go to the air force academy if that helps.

The school is most likely using a proxy to try to minimize access to "bad" web sites, etc. So you need to go to System -> Preferences -> Network Proxy and fill in that dialog with the values appropriate for your network. If you do not know what they are, ask the network admin at your school.

Once these are set correctly, closing Firefox and restarting it should then allow you to browse via the school's proxy server.
