Firefox 3.0.1 on Gutsy? Even after reloading, Synaptic only shows packages for a 3.0 alpha or 2.0.0.16.

Asked by Nathan Dorfman

I would like to install the current release of Firefox, 3.0.1, on my Ubuntu 7.10 box. Naturally, I would prefer to install an Ubuntu package rather than the generic tarball.

In Synaptic, after I click Reload, the available versions are firefox (2.0.0.16), firefox-trunk (a random trunk build) and firefox-3.0. The latter is *not* 3.0.1 or any other production release, but rather appears to be the same version as firefox-trunk (they share the 'Latest Version' value of 3.0~alpha8-[...].

Am I missing something?

The current version in the Ubuntu Hardy repositories is Firefox 3.0

Thanks, however, I'm asking about Ubuntu Gutsy (7.10) -- which is supposed to be supported until April 2009, if I'm not mistaken.

Yes, but the version in Gutsy would not be any newer than Hardy.
I would suggest you stick with 3.0a and stay within the versions offered by the repositories.

That will save you possible future conflict problems.

I'm sorry, what? I'm not sure if we are understanding each other. The firefox-3.0 package in gutsy is a random alpha snapshot. It is not in any way a replacement for production release 3.0.1. There is no package in the gutsy repositories for this (current) release of firefox.

Thanks for your continued attention.

sudo apt-get upgrade

I'm guessing the current version in the Ubuntu Gutsy repositories is Firefox 3.0

As we, in this community-based support site, are not privvy to the release cycles of the Ubuntu repositories, I would suggest sticking with the available versions unless you are equipped to deal with the dependency repercussions of grabbing installs outside the repos.

Can you help with this problem?
