What version of Ubuntu are you using? Was this a clean install or an upgrade?

Best Regards,

There is a mis match in the version of the files that got installed previously and the files that are presently on your system, thats the reason it flashes the message saying you cant update as such.
Solution for this wud be, try removing the files related to the firefox and then get installed the newer version and try loading the updates, this wud solve your problem.

Could you do the following:

Navigate to: /home/[username]/.mozilla/firefox/[random].default/extensions

From your home folder you'll have to press [Ctrl] + [H] to view the hidden ".mozilla" folder.

Make sure you have write permissions to the following folders: .mozilla and extensions

Do this by right clicking on the folder and going to "Properties" and then clicking on the "Permissions" tab

You can read up on how to change permissions here: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/FilePermissions

Can you help with this problem?
